William Rust Hill II, a native of Bridgeville, Delaware, and a long-time resident of Fairhope, Alabama, passed away Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at the age of 92. Capt. Bill Hill was a United States Air Force veteran, having served as a flight instructor and later, a test pilot for the U2 spy plane. Following the Air Force, he served in the Delaware Air National Guard flying C130’s on missions to Europe and Vietnam. Flying recreationally remained a lifelong passion. He enjoyed a long career in many areas of aviation including mid-air recovery systems, the Voyager aircraft, and military Unmanned Air Vehicles. He continued to work until the age of 84. He was an avid sailor and served as a past Commodore for the Lake Forest Yacht Club. He is a Heritage member of the Fairhope Yacht Club. He and Cheryl made many happy memories taking trips on their power boat “Her Diamond”. In addition to flying and boating, he and Cheryl enjoyed traveling both in the US and abroad. Bill was preceded in death by his son, William Rust Hill III, sister, MaryLu Waddell; and granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Herf. He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Hill of Daphne; daughters, Kathleen (Brian) Connolly of Daphne and Cindy Ann Herf of Fairhope; grandchildren, Jennifer Kali Bancel of Westfield, NJ and Aaron Phillip Herf of Fairhope; great granddaughter, Lila Jean Bancel of Westfield, NJ; other relatives and friends.
