William “Bill” A. Chambers

January 6, 1940 - December 31, 2021

Bill passed away peacefully just days shy of this 82nd birthday at his family home in Orange Beach, AL.  On January 6th, 1940 Bill was the first of three children born to Marion V. and William P.F. Chambers in Darby, PA.  He grew up in Drexel Hill, PA where he graduated from Upper Darby High School.  Bill went on to earn a Chemical Engineering degree from Drexel Institute of Technology and in 1964 earned his Master of Science in Industrial Administration from Purdue University.  Bill was commissioned in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged after earning the rank of Captain.  On June 19th, 1965 Bill married the love of his life, Robin Curran in Springfield, PA.  Together they had four children that they raised in the Roman Catholic tradition.  Bill’s military and subsequent professional career in the paper industry brought them to Fort Belvoir in Fairfax, VA, Chester, PA, Marinette, WI, Dover, DE, Mobile, AL, and Memphis, TN.  The majority of his career was spent with Scott Paper company where Bill made lifelong friendships.

After retiring from the paper industry and settling in Orange Beach, AL, Bill was not ready for retirement and accepted a position as Executive Director at Wilmer Hall Children’s Home in Mobile, AL.  Bill was passionate about serving young people in need through this non-profit faith based organization.  Bill’s final position was Executive Director of the Alabama Free Clinic where the focus was to meet the medical needs of the citizens of Baldwin County, AL who could not afford the rising costs of healthcare.

Throughout his lifetime Bill was driven to serve others donating his time and talents to countless organizations in all of the states where he lived.  Most noticeably, in his later years, Bill was an instrumental founding member of the Knight of Columbus Council at St. Thomas by the Sea. He served on the finance committee as well as organizing and volunteering for countless other events sponsored by his beloved church.  On November 21, 2021 Bill was honored and humbled to be chosen by his parish as the recipient of the Christ the King medal for his outstanding service to his parish and community.

Bill was forever giving of his time and talent to benefit others, but nothing brought him more joy than spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.  “Pop”, as he was affectionately called, always announced his arrival with a melodious whistle that brought a smile to the “little ones” and the not so little ones faces!

Bill is preceded in death by his father, William P.F Chambers, his mother, Marion V. Chambers, and sister and brother-in-law Janet and Allen Lockerman.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Rosamond “Robin” E. Chambers, his children, William R. Chambers (Leigh) Mobile, AL, Danielle E. Nicholas (Shane) Mobile, AL, Robyn E. Chambers-Holford (Douglas Taylor) Kingwood, TX, and Andrew B. Chambers (Stephanie) Roswell, GA, his brother Robert L. Chambers, Denton, MD, his grandchildren James Meadows (Allison), Elizabeth Meadows Greaves (Jacob), Shane B. Holford (Alex Ogden), Brooke E. Holford, Curran E. Nicholas, Mary Keenan E.
