A memorial service for Walter Herman Seefeld Jr., 88, will take place at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 18, 2020, at Saint Stephen Lutheran Church in Shreveport, Louisiana. Walt was born on October 11, 1931, in Cohay, Mississippi, to Walter Herman Seefeld Sr. and Marion Lucus Seefeld. He passed away peacefully at his home in Fairhope, Alabama, surrounded by his family on Friday, July 3, 2020. Walt grew up in Laurel, Mississippi, and graduated from Gardner High School. He then served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. In 1956, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Mississippi State University. For most of his career, he worked as a mechanical engineer in the pulp and paper industry. Walt will be remembered as a gentle, kind and patient soul by those who knew him. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who enjoyed spending time with family and kept them entertained with his dry sense of humor and well-told stories. Walt was always reading and learning new things, and he became quite the history buff. He loved tinkering away in his workshop, and later in life, he learned the art of stained glassmaking, sharing many pieces with family members. Walt had a methodical nature, he was never one to be rushed, and he demonstrated careful craftsmanship in all his projects. He will be greatly missed, especially by his wife of 66 years Mary Louise Gamble Seefeld. Walt and Mary married in 1953 and raised four children. They spent most of their retirement years in Shreveport and later Fairhope. They enjoyed traveling together, visiting family and friends, and spending time at the lake. Walt is survived by his wife Mary; four children, Betty Haynes (John), Kathryn McFadden (Bill), Karen Hill (Bruce), and Fred Seefeld (Virginia); his sister Mildred Florio and brother Glenn Seefeld; six grandchildren, Patrick Murphy (son Rhodes, daughters Eve and Grace) Elton Graugnard (Melanie and daughter Imogene), Nicolle Graugnard, Jason Counts (Morgan), Megan Toler (Ryan and daughters Hazeleigh and Molly), and Chris Counts, along with many other loving family members and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Saint Stephen Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, Saint Stephen Lutheran Church, 8400 Kinston Rd., Shreveport, LA 71108, www.saintstephenlutheran.org.
