Velma Sullivan Moor passed away at her home in Gulf Shores, AL on Monday, August 2, 2021 at the age of 101 with her three daughters at her side. Velma was born in Armory. MS and grew up in Hamilton MS, one of eleven children. As a high school student she was honored as Miss Hamilton High and was a member of the 1937 State of Mississippi Women's High School Basketball Championship team her senior year. Among her many honors was the first ever Citizenship Award given at Hamilton High. After graduating high school, she moved to Birmingham, AL where she met and married, John K. Moor, Sr. Together they raised 4 children in Center Point, AL. Velma was actively involved as a member of First United Methodist Church of Center Point, and as a member of the PTA in Center Point schools. She was also an adult leader in the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls. Velma and John retired to Gulf Shores, AL in the late 1970's. Velma was a volunteer with the South Baldwin Hospital Auxiliary and was a beloved member of Lagoon Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and was active in the Women's Ministry. Velma was preceded in death by her husband, John Sr., her parents, Bertis and Pauline, her brothers and sisters Trannie, Bert, David, Russell, Robert, Eula, Verla, Florence, Myrtle, and Jean, her son, John, Jr. and her great-grandson Evan She is survived by her daughters Lynn, Jacqueline (Darrell), and Patricia (Michael), six grandsons, three great-granddaughters, three great-grandsons, two great great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friends and her beloved, loyal, little dog Boo. Velma is remembered for her love of gardening, painting and writing poetry, as well as her kindness, selflessness, and as an inspiration for others through her strong faith. Her family and friends will cherish the many memories and the joy of knowing her as a Friend, Mother and Grandmother. A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, August 11, 2021 at 11:00am at Lagoon Baptist Church, 17867 Highway 180, Gulf Shores, AL 36542. A Graveside Memorial Service will be scheduled to take place in late September at Jefferson Memorial Gardens – Trussville, 1591 Gadsden Highway, Birmingham, AL, 35235.
