Suzanne Starr Flynn Turk (nee Ivey), 74, a native of Winter Haven, FL, and a resident of Daphne, AL, passed away on Friday, August 14, 2020. Starr was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church and a registered nurse with Mercy Medical in Daphne; the University of South Alabama; the American Red Cross, South Alabama Chapter; and the Alabama Board of Public Health. Starr was a loving mother, a wonderful wife, and endearing companion. She and her husband, Jim, found each other again after 42 years and their friendship grew into love; they married in May 2016. Jim describes himself as the one lost sheep and, through Starr’s example, love, and encouragement he found a deeper faith. For the last four years they enjoyed their travels and adventures around the United States and Israel. She shared a passion for sailing to Dauphin Island with her family in their earlier days and more recently, she enjoyed sharing family meals to enjoy on Sundays with Jim, Adele, Michael, Christian, and Robbins. She lived her faith in fullness; her life revolved around helping and caring for others. Her love of painting, pottery, and poetry was accompanied by her joy in working outdoors in her yard. Each morning, after reading and saying her prayers, she has a conversation with God and a walk with Jesus as she inspected her flowers and cherished plants. The foundation of her life was parish activities at Christ the King Catholic Church. Her love of singing guided her to the choir; we still hear her sweet voice echoing in the hallways. In 2012, Starr joined the Mobile Holy Spirit Community of Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites; after an aspirancy program, Starr was clothed with the Scapular in October 2013. After two years of initial formation, she took First Promises on October 2015, and, after three more years formation, she took Final Promises on October 2018. She was a beloved member and will be greatly missed. Her last request was to wear her Scapular and be buried with it. To further her faith, she joined Cursillos in Christianity (Cursillos de Cristiandad). Starr volunteered many weekends to assist fellow Cursillo participants; and loved sharing her experiences with new Cursillistas to help them connect with their faith. She never met a stranger and was a delight to be around. Her smile and energy were catalysts for a special time among her family and friends. Her time with us was, and will, remain a true blessing. Starr was preceded in death by her first husband, Augustus Hemley (Nick) Flynn III, Suzanne Farr Crawford (mother), and William Holder Ivey (father). She is survived by her husband, James (Jim) Turk; children, Michael Shannon Flynn (Christian), Patrick Robbins Flynn, James Troy Turk, and Sharon Turk Yager (Les); grandchildren, Mary Bradley Flynn, Benjamin Turk Yager, Olivia Arden Yager; sister, Elizabeth Allenbach (Steve); niece, Tiffany Suzanne Allenbach; nephew, Stephen Aaron Allenbach (Suzanne), and cousin, Adele Holder Stafford. A memorial mass will be held at Christ the King Catholic Church, scheduled for 11 am on September 1, 2020. Prior to mass, there will be a rosary at 10:30 am. Attendance will be limited and determined at a later date. Mass will be live streamed at 11 am and can be viewed at www.ctkdaphne.org. The rosary will be live streamed starting at 10:30 am.
