Sandy Scott Helmstadter of Fairhope, AL died peacefully on Friday, April 29, 2022, at the age of 83. She was loved by her husband John for 59 years and raised two wonderful children, William (wife Robin) Helmstadter and Julia (husband Tom) Nicholas. She was fortunate to travel extensively, live in many different states and even abroad, and always strove to “grow where she was planted.” She brought her vibrant energy to work in retail and hotel management and real estate. Sandy was an avid reader, always wanted to try new things, and enjoyed listening to live music by the water, gardening, and a wide variety of creative pursuits. She especially loved dogs – fostering them when she didn’t have one of her own and volunteering with The Haven, a no-kill animal shelter, to help give dogs loving new homes. Her helpful and caring nature and radiant smile will be greatly missed by family and friends. In addition to her husband and children, Sandy is survived by her sister, Beverly Literal, brother, Geoff (wife Jan) Scott, and granddaughters, Madeline Helmstadter and Laura Nicholas. While there won’t be formal services, the family will arrange moments of remembrance at both Mobile Bay and Pelican Lake in Minnesota where she spent many happy summers at the family cabin. For those who wish, memorial donations to The Haven Animal Shelter (559 S. Section St., Fairhope, AL 36532, havenforanimals.org) would be very much appreciated.
