Sabra Atkins was born Sabra Lucille Stough on March 11, 1932 to George and Mary Allen Stough. She spent her early youth as a resident of Marengo County, Ala. until the family moved to Bay Minette, Ala. She graduated from Baldwin County High School and continued her education at Huntingdon College. After a year at Huntingdon, she transferred to Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University), where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She graduated from API with a degree in elementary education in 1954 and went on to earn a master's degree from Troy (State) University in 1983. While at Auburn, Sabra met her true love, George H. Atkins and the two were married on July 17, 1955. In 1967, they moved to Spanish Fort, Ala. where Sabra spent most of her career teaching at Spanish Fort Grammar School. She retired in 1988 after 28 years. She continued her passion for teaching even after retirement by volunteering as a reading tutor with the Literacy Council. Sabra was greatly loved and respected in the Spanish Fort community. She remained active in the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and Delta Kappa Gamma, where she held various officer roles throughout the years. She was an active member of Saint Francis Street United Methodist Church for many years, and then the Spanish Fort United Methodist Church and Spanish Fort Presbyterian Church as well. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, George Atkins, and her brother, William Stough. She is survived by her brother, George (Peggy) Stough, of Lakeland, Fla. and her sister-in-law, Gloria Stough; three children: Marylu Garcia of Summerdale, Ala., Haynes (Mavis) Atkins of Brooklyn, NY and Ashley (Cody) Sweetland of Niceville, Fla.; four grandchildren: Jennifer (Lewis) Carter, Sabra (Sam) Rochell, Will Sweetland and Celeste Atkins; and two great-grandchildren, Lucy and Marshall. Friends and family will gather for a visitation at 2 p.m. CT on Friday, January 27, 2023, at Spanish Fort UMC (6690 Spanish Fort Blvd., Spanish Fort, AL 36527), followed by a Celebration of Life service at 3 p.m. The family suggests contributions be made to the Baldwin Humane Society, the Spanish Fort UMC, or your favorite charity.
