Rosella Turner went peacefully home to her Lord and Savior on March 18th, 2025. With the wonderful care and guidance of the Gentiva Hospice staff, she was able to spend her remaining weeks on this earth at home.
Rose was born on November 23, 1931, in Barnwell to parents Frank and Mamie Lou McKenzie. She grew up, along with her brother Frank E. McKenzie, on her parents farm in Barnwell. During those years she developed a strong work ethic. She was surrounded by a large and loving extended family that were a big part of her life. She came to saving faith in the Lord Jesus Christ at age 12 and was baptized in the Fish River.
Rose was working in Mobile when she met her future husband, Ivan L. Turner. Ivan was based at Brookly Field as a pilot in the Army Air Corp. They were married on June 22, 1951. Her faithful commitment to her husband meant leaving her beloved Alabama. She traveled by ship to Japan where he was based during the Korean War. When he began his career as an airline pilot, she lived first in New Jersey, and then in California where her two daughters (Deb and Terry) grew up. In 1986 Rose, Ivan, and Terry returned to Rose’s beloved Barnwell/Fairhope community, where she spent the rest of her life. Her love for her husband, her daughters, grandchildren, and great grandchildren was precious.
She loved serving her church families first at Willow Glen Alliance Church in San Jose, California and later at First Baptist Church, Fairhope. She volunteered for a number of years at Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose, and for 25 years at Thomas Hospital in Fairhope.
Rose was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Frank E. McKenzie; sister-in-law Irene McKenzie, and nephew Frank Hugh McKenzie.
She leaves behind her husband of 73 years, Ivan L. Turner; her daughters Debra J. Boogaard (Bob) and Terry D. Turner; her two grandsons John Boogaard (Kathryn), David Boogaard (Stephanie), her granddaughter Elaine Jenkins, her six great grandchildren Nathan, Philip, Julia, Emily, Jubilee, and Naomi; as well as her two nieces Irma Haney and Gloria Comalander, and nephew Emory McKenzie (Debbie June).
Her memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church, Fairhope on Monday March 24 at 11:00 am. Visitation will start at 10:00 am.
She will be laid to rest at Brook-Cedron Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to Thomas Hospital Women’s Auxiliary or First Baptist Fairhope Church Benevolent Fund.
