Rex Edwin Fitzpatrick, 84, a resident of Fairhope and husband of Carolle (C.Y.) Fitzpatrick, passed away on Friday, May 28, 2021.
Rex was raised in the suburbs of Chicago. He grew up playing baseball with his friends, working on cars, and working at his father’s metal fabricating plant. He graduated from West Leyden High School and with encouragement from a high school teacher, he went on to college. He got his engineering degree at Tri-State College in Indiana. Rex worked in the facilities department for Bell Laboratories. He worked on building engineering projects on their very large campus in Lisle, Illinois.
Rex was an avid skier, golfer, and card player. He enjoyed playing poker and chess. He taught himself how to sail on a small Sunfish sailboat. Eventually he was expert enough to be on the crew of racing boats in the Chicago Yacht Club’s Mackinac Race, a 333 mile race across the length of Lake Michigan.
Rex and CY enjoyed travel, golf, socializing and sailing. After moving to Fairhope, they became members of the Fairhope Yacht Club. Rex was also an avid skier, card player, and outdoorsman.
He is survived by his wife, Carolle; his step-daughter, Christine Gavlin and her husband, Tim, of Western Springs, IL; step-son, Denis Bohm and his wife, Claudia, of Austin, TX; daughters Robyn Kunst and Susan Fitzpatrick of Chicago, IL; grandchildren, Bridget Gavlin and her wife, Annie, of Chicago, IL, Patrick Gavlin of Seattle, WA, Kyle Bohm and his wife, Haley, of Austin, TX; two great-grandchildren in Austin, TX; and brother, Russ Fitzpatrick of Casa Grande, AZ.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
