Rebecca Lucas

December 6, 1949 — March 21, 2025

Becky passed from this life to the next in peace with her loving husband by her side at Thomas Hospital in Fairhope, Alabama on March 21, 2025. She will be missed by family and friends across the country, a reflection of the adventurous life Becky lived.

Becky was born and grew up in Birmingham, Alabama. She graduated from Berry High School in 1968 and graduated from Samford University in 1973 with a degree in Elementary Education. She later received a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from Valdosta State University. She taught school in Birmingham, Valdosta, Georgia, and Mesa, Arizona. Her students were her pride and joy. She went over and above to make each student feel special. She was the first teacher to arrive each morning and the last one to leave each afternoon. She was a dedicated teacher, and teaching children was her true passion.

She married the love of her life, David Lee Lucas, in 1982, and they spent over forty years together before her passing. She also leaves behind her brother Michael Clay Garver (Linda Hastie) of Mobile, two nieces and three nephews - Mary Michael Garver Kelley and Mallory Garver Carson (Joshua Adam), both of Birmingham, Myles Clayton Garver of Mobile, and Stephen Christopher Tucker of Athens, Georgia and Noah Anthony Tucker of Atlanta. She also leaves behind three great nephews Thomas Henry Kelley, Jacob Webster Carson, and Charles Michael Carson, all of Birmingham. Becky is preceded in death by her parents Claude and Sara Garver and her sister Laura Garver Tucker. She is also preceded in death by her great nephew Benjamin Micah Kelley and great niece Kathryn Lyn Kelley.

She and David retired in 2014 and moved to Gulf Shores, Alabama. This was Becky’s dream to live in Gulf Shores. She loved to walk on the beach, collect shells, and fish with David if it was not too early in the morning. The move to Gulf Shores from Arizona brought her closer to her family, and she relished the extra time to attend family celebrations and holiday gatherings. Everyone was thrilled Becky and David could be a part of the special moments. Becky was a natural giver, and to know her was most certainly to love her.

Her family wants to thank Dr. Craig Dowden of Family Practice Associates in Fairhope and the ICU staff at Thomas Hospital in Fairhope for their skill and gentle care during Becky’s last week on earth.

In recognition of Becky’s deep love for every child, donations may be sent in her memory to Make-A-Wish Alabama 1 Perimeter Park South Suite 100S Birmingham, AL 35243. You can mail a check to this address or donate online. This foundation’s mission is to create life-changing wishes for children with critical illness.

There are no funeral plans at this time.
