Ray Brown Hartwell, 94, a resident of Westminster Village, Spanish Fort, AL, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 15, 2023. Formerly, he was a resident of Fairhope, AL for 33 years. He is preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Marian Ann Hartwell. Together they had three sons, the late Ray “Pug” Douglas Hartwell (Ann) of Daphne, AL, Tommy Kent Hartwell (Joanne) of Panama City Beach, FL, and Terry Joel Hartwell (Dana) of Maryville, TN. Loving grandfather to 9 grandchildren: Scott (Ann), Bailey (Harrison), Karen (Kip), Alan, Ashley (Mike), Joel (Casey), Jeff (Rachel), Andrew (Francine), and Matthew (Amanda). Adoring great-grandfather to 16 great-grandchildren: Nate, Lucy, Collins, Dandy, Jack, Madison, Sam, Caiden, Harper, Tori, Maelee, Kennedy, Savannah, Brooklyn, Clara, and Oliver. Ray was recognized nationally for his many contributions to The Lions Club, especially receiving the Melvin Jones Fellow award. He was instrumental in the early development of the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo. He was a member of Fairhope United Methodist Church for 35 years and served as a Trustee. His 50+ year career with Alcoa Aluminum Company took him to foreign assignments in Suriname, South America, and Jamaica, as well as multiple locations in the United States. Ray was the consummate storyteller of his life, which included stories about his childhood, his kids, his grandchildren, his work, and his travels. Everyone who met him loved his stories. A Celebration of Ray’s Life will be held at the Fairhope United Methodist Church, Saturday, October 14. Visitation in the sanctuary will begin at 10:30 a.m. followed by the service 11:00 a.m. A luncheon will be held in Wesley Hall at the church. A private internment for the family at the Colony Cemetery in downtown Fairhope will be held at 2:30 p.m. Contributions in lieu of flowers can be made in his name to Caring Ministries at Fairhope United Methodist Church or The Lions Club in Fairhope, AL.
