Peggy Jane Rogers went home to meet her Lord Jesus on Oct 12, 2023, at age 86. Peggy was born to Jane Ester Leaverton on December 6, 1936, in Muskogee, Oklahoma, and moved to Dallas, Texas, as an infant. As a child growing up in Texas, Peggy loved to dance (tap and ballet), ride horses, paint, play piano, and play softball. She lived in Dallas until she turned 13, when her family moved to Nashville, Tennessee. She attended middle school and high school in Nashville and received both Dance and Academic scholarships to George Peabody College in Nashville. While in college, she met the love of her live, Donald Rogers, who was a student across the street at Vanderbilt University. They married in Nashville and moved one year later to Boston, Massachusetts, so Don could pursue his graduate degree. While in Massachusetts, they had four daughters in four-and-a-half years: quite an accomplishment and a little bit crazy. Peggy and Don moved their young family to Wilmington, Delaware in 1965 to start Don’s career with DuPont. When DuPont gave them a short, international assignment to Germany for 4 years, Peggy was thrilled to experience living in a new culture and embraced the local customs and community in their new home in Bad Soden, Germany. During their time abroad, she traveled throughout much of Europe with her family and women’s groups. After moving back to Wilmington, Peggy became a part-time teacher, a docent for the Greenbank Museum, worked at the Brandywine Zoo, and sang in a local women’s choir. She and Don eventually purchased her dream house in 1986: a 1700s historic home and farm that they lovingly restored. She raised sheep and was a very active trainer with the local 4H club. Most important to her, she became a grandmother during this time and doted on each of her grandchildren. They all called her Nanny, and soon everyone else called her Nanny too. Being a grandmother was the most precious thing that Peggy had ever done. After retirement in 1998, Peggy and Don moved to beautiful Daphne, Alabama, Don’s childhood community. They immediately met new friends and got involved with church, neighborhood, and local organizations and lived a very active life on Mobile Bay. Throughout her life, Peggy was a gracious hostess for many church and social gatherings in her home, wherever she lived, and all who came enjoyed her great sense of humor and good food. Every day was a fun time when you were around Peggy. In addition to being a very loving, supportive, and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Peggy will always be remembered for her bountiful generosity, constant sense of silly humor, love of nature, gardening, cooking, artwork, teaching Sunday School with puppets, sending cards, reading the Bible, working with animals (especially dogs), and volunteering with multiple service organizations. Always ready with a warm smile, Peggy never met a stranger. She spread her love and her love of Jesus and His word to anyone who would listen. Peggy joins her beloved husband Donald Rogers, her daughter Brenda Hale, her mother, Jane Leaverton Duncan, and grandmother, Daisy Leaverton in heaven. She is survived by her daughters: Donna (Wayne) Darner, Cindy Pence, Lorie (Craig) Joyner, brother: Michael Duncan, grandchildren: Madison and Christopher Darner, Kristin Wesson, Richard Pence, Ryan Joyner, Rachael Moore, Rebecca McClantoc, and eight great grandchildren. A Celebration of Peggy’s Life will be held at Spanish Fort Church of Christ on November 4, 2023. Visitation with the family will be at 10 AM followed by the service at 11 AM. In keeping with Peggy’s generous spirit, in lieu of flowers, please consider donating to her favorite philanthropies: JDRF International (Juvenile Diabetes Research) or the Epilepsy Foundation.
