Patrick H. Dunn, Sr.

d. May 24, 2020

The Reverend Patrick Hall Dunn, Sr., age 82, passed away on Sunday, May 24, 2020. He was born in Florence, AL, on April 4, 1938, to the late Julius Ethelbert Dunn, Sr., M.D. and Margaret Berridge Dunn. He is survived by the mother of his children, Phyllis Harwell Warren Dunn, and his three children: Ashlee Warren Dunn Thull (Monty), Dawson Dunn Morgan (Brad), and Patrick Hall Dunn, Jr. (Jennifer). His grandchildren are Delaney Dawson Thull, Tyler Warren Thull, Maitland Montgomery Thull, Max Bradshaw Morgan, Emory Ashlee Morgan, Baylee Rose Dunn, and Avery Harwell Dunn. He is survived by his eldest brother, William Berridge Dunn, Sr., Esq. (Sarah Louise) and was preceded in death by his brother, Julius Ethelbert Dunn, Jr., M.D., and his sister-in-law, Mary Elizabeth. He attended Starke Military School during his early years and graduated from Wetumpka High School. A life-long musician, at age 14 he began playing his beloved oboe as second chair with the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra. Graduating from the University of Alabama with an A.B. in English and French, Pat played saxophone in the Alabama Cavaliers Dance Band, was chaplain of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity, and worshipped at Canterbury Chapel Episcopal Church on campus. He attended Officer Candidate School and served honorably as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy from 1960-1964, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade while circumnavigating the world twice. After teaching school for a year in Charleston, S.C., he attended Virginia Theological Seminary and earned his Master of Divinity. It was at the University of Alabama where he met and fell in love with Phyllis. Pat very much enjoyed his career serving as an Episcopal priest for churches in Alabama and Mississippi. He was a gifted preacher and avid scholar of biblical interpretation. He and Phyllis went on several medical missions in Ecuador and Honduras. In his later ministry, Pat continued serving as an interim priest for numerous churches across the Gulf Coast. Pat enjoyed building houses, boats, and planes. He was passionate about conservation of waterways and marine life. He wrote and published many articles advocating for the environment. He loved to sail on Mobile Bay and participated in the Dauphin Island Race for many years. Pat enthusiastically played every wind instrument available, as well as his guitar. He loved a good joke and his big laugh always brought joy. He was a creative cook, and fellowshipping over a good meal with friends was his greatest pleasure. He was a shepherd of men, mullet and oysters. It is comforting to know that his last moments were spent in conversation with his Lord.
