Patricia "Patsy" M. Fulghum

Patricia M. Fulghum (Patsy) was born in Memphis, Tennessee on June 30, 1927, and passed away peacefully on March 7, 2025. Patsy was a resident of Tennessee for 84 years prior to her move to Foley, Alabama in 2011.

Patsy was preceded in death by her parents, C. C. (Mage) and Gertrude Mize, her brother Charles Mize, her husband of 34 years, Edward Fulghum, her husband of 23 years, John Robert Simpson, Sr., her son John Robert Simpson, Jr. and her grandsons Patrick Simpson and Michael Bishop.

She is survived by her children Judi Bishop (William), Lynn Askew, and Steve Simpson (Nancy); her stepchildren Betty Etheridge, Jere Fulghum, Robert Fulghum (Karen) and Carol Moss; grandchildren Jonathan Bishop (Dana), John Simpson (Heather), Sallie Durden (Sean), Chris Askew, Eric Simpson (Amy), Luke Simpson (Lindsey), and Evan Simpson; step grandchildren Nancy Tranum (Bubba), Jeff Etheridge (Barbie), Tyler Fulghum (Jazzimen), Casey Fulghum, Jennifer Burns (Tyler), Preston Fulghum, and Brandon Moss (Melissa); and numerous great grandchildren.

Patsy graduated from Central High School in Memphis, Tennessee in 1945 and married John Robert (Johnny) Simpson, Sr. in September of that year while he was home on leave. They began their married life at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar (San Diego) and settled in Memphis at the end of Johnny’s enlistment. They were married 23 years and had 4 children. After Johnny died, Patsy pursued her life-long dream to be a nurse, starting college in 1971 and graduating in 1973. She worked as an RN in several different areas – she was a public health nurse, a Health Occupations teacher, and a psychiatric nurse (her favorite) at the state mental hospital located in Bolivar, Tennessee. Patsy married Edward Fulghum in 1974 and they enjoyed 34 years together. They loved traveling and visiting their grandchildren.

Patsy and Ed were members of the First Baptist Church in Bolivar and were involved in the XYZ (Extra Years of Zest) group, attended a Sunday School class and Patsy was a member of the Women’s Missionary Union. Patsy served the church and her community in many capacities from helping to prepare meals for Meals on Wheels to helping with Bible School. Patsy was a small group leader for the Bible Study Fellowship program in her area for 15 years.

After Ed passed away, Patsy moved to Baldwin County Alabama to be near her son, Bobby, and her daughter Judi and their families.

In accordance with Patsy’s wishes, a memorial service will be held in Bolivar, Tennessee at a later date.

To honor Patsy’s memory donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to the Caring Ministry at Fairhope United Methodist Church.
