Mona Dees Ferguson

September 24, 1948 — January 24, 2025

Mobile

Mona Ruth Dees was born on September 24, 1948 and left this earth on January 24, 2025.  Mona was born in Hatch Bend, Florida to Marvin and Ruth Dees and lived there in her early life with eight siblings.  Mona worked many hot summers on the family farm in Hatch Bend where they grew corn and harvested tobacco.  She attended Lafayette High School in Mayo, FL where she played basketball and graduated.  She went on to attend Florida State University and graduated with a degree in Education.  She was passionate about helping others and taught Special Education in both the Florida and Alabama Education Systems where she was an advocate for those kids who needed it most.  Mona retired with 25 years of service in the Alabama Education System.

Mona met her future husband, Ted Ferguson, when she was a student assistant at Florida State University.  It was not long before love struck and they were married shortly thereafter in 1970.  They later moved to Mobile, AL where their son John Nevada Ferguson was born in 1977.  Mona and Ted were married 54 years and always served as a wonderful example of a loving, devoted couple and parents.  Not long after John's birth, she was diagnosed with the first of three major cancer diagnoses.  She overcame stage 4 cervical cancer and became an advocate for the local branch of the American Cancer Society and volunteered for the Mitchell Cancer Center.

Mona is survived by her husband (Ted), her son (John), daughter in law (Liz) and their three perfect granddaughters, (Blake,19), (Livy,17) and (Sophie,14).  She was affectionately called Mimi and admirably served carpool duty to all the girls until last Fall.  This gave her a chance to see the girls almost every day during the school year, sharing snacks and wise grandmotherly wisdom.

Mona will always be remembered for her kind and generous heart and her warm, loving smile.  Her family was her greatest joy.

A memorial service will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church EPC (2651 SpringHIll Ave., Mobile, AL) on Friday, February 7th at 10am.
