Medford "Larry" Roe, Sr.

Medford H. “Larry” Roe, Sr, died at his home, in Mobile, on March 14, 2021, with his son, Medford, by his side. He was 87 years old. He was born on the Eastern Shore of Maryland but lived most of his adult life in Mobile. He graduated from Christchurch School in Virginia, and from the University of Alabama, where he was a member of Signa Nu fraternity, and served in the Student Legislature. For many years he held positions with Southern Kraft Division headquarters of International Paper Company, and later served as a director of the State of Alabama’s Management Improvement Program. A lifelong Episcopalian, Larry served his parish on the vestries of St. John’s Mobile, and St. Francis at the Point Traditional Protestant Episcopal Church. Larry served his parish as lay reader, senior warden of the Vestry, and delegate to diocesan conventions. He was also chairman of the church’s Wilmer Hall Board of Trustees. Larry was active in the Republican Party for many years as a member of both the County and State Republican Executive Committees, and as a delegate to district and national conventions. He was a former president of the Mobile Lions Club, and served on the boards of a number of local civic organizations. Larry was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Henry Roe, and his sister, Martha R. (Henry) Lancaster. He is survived by his daughter, Catherine R. (James) Jordan, of Greensboro, NC, and his son Medford Hilleary Roe, Jr, of Mobile, as well as five grandchildren: William Alister Roe, of Atlanta, and Helen Taylor Roe, of Mobile; James Jordan (Kelly), of Charlotte, NC, Hilleary Jordan Boyer (John), of Charlotte, NC, and Ellanor Catherine Jordan of Fairfax, VA. He is also survived by a brother-in-law, George A. (Donna) Henry, of Huntsville, AL, and many other relatives. A graveside service will be held at Montrose Cemetery on Saturday, March 27, 2021, at 2:00 PM. Memorials may be made in Larry’s name to Wilmer Hall Children’s Home in Mobile.
