Mary Katherine Hertel Madison

Mary Katherine Madison (née Hertel), 76, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2024 at Eastern Shore Rehabilitation and Health Center. 

 The youngest of three children, Mary was born to George and Clair Hertel on February 7, 1948 in Foley, Alabama. She grew up in Elberta with her two older brothers, attending St. Benedict Catholic School for her elementary and middle school years, while graduating from Foley High School in 1966. A diligent worker, she was employed at Gulf Telephone Company for over twenty years.

 Mary was preceded in death by both of her parents, her beloved husband Mannon T. Madison, her son Jason M. Madison, and stepson David “Dusty” Madison. She is survived by her son Robert T. Madison and stepson Jim “Rusty” Madison (Pat); her siblings, Bill Hertel (Barbara) and David Hertel (Freida); her grandchildren, Josie Madison, Jack Madison, Tina Barnhill, Julie Tompkins, David “Sambo” Madison, and Tommy Madison; as well as multiple great-grandchildren.

 Warm, generous, and compassionate to all, Mary, affectionately known as “Mammy” by her grandchildren, was so adored by her family, friends, and community. Her house was always open—cozy, comfortable, and wreathed with the scent of her famous chocolate chip cookies. To know her was to love her, and to be loved by her was to know the heart of an angel.
