Captain Marvin Hough Obituary

Captain Marvin Hough passed away on April 10th, 2025. He was born in 1944 in Holmes Hospital, Foley’s first hospital. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Nell Walker Hough from Orange Beach, AL. Preceding him in death were his father Fred A. Hough, mother Lucille Miller Hough and two adopted children Kelly Anne Hough Phillips and Jonathan Andrew Hough. Having grown up in Bon Secour, AL, he attended Swift School before graduating from Foley High School in 1963. After high school he attended Livingston University graduating in 1967 with a degree in Business Administration. Capt Hough entered the United States Navy after college and served aboard the USS Oriskany (CVA-34) doing three combat deployments during the Vietnam Conflict. Following Active Duty, Capt. Hough served in the Navy Reserve where he became Commanding Officer for the NASC Naval Reserve Support Unit in Pensacola, FL and Norfolk, VA. These units provided combat support for officers who mobilized during Operation Desert Storm in Iraq. While in the Reserves he earned a Master’s Degree in Business Management from Troy University and worked as a Civil Servant for NADEP, Pensacola and Jacksonville. After retiring from Civil Service, he and his wife, Mary Nell moved back to Baldwin County where he spent time volunteering at elementary schools tutoring children and delivering Meals on Wheels to elderly shut-ins. His favorite pastimes were performing yard work and watching at every opportunity his beloved Alabama Crimson Tide and Atlanta Braves play. He was honored to serve as a Deacon at Oyster Bay Baptist Church and served on several committees, including The NAOMI Widows ministry. In Lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Oyster Bay Baptist Church’s Children’s playground at 4280 Plash Road, Gulf Shores, AL 36542.
