Maria Konstantinos Scourtes Athanasios

d. October 8, 2020

Maria Konstantinos Scourtes Athanasios died peacefully surrounded by her family on October 8, 2020. Born in Marousi, Athens, Greece, Maria was raised in her family home until the age of 11. She had fond memories of gatherings with cousins and relatives there. Her family migrated to Malbis Plantation in 1954 to join her Uncle Jason Malbis (Antonios Markopoulos) who founded the community in Alabama. While attending business school in Mobile, Maria met her future husband, Spero Athanasios, who was working at the Malbis Bakery. The couple married in 1966, raised four children on Pensacola Beach and owned/operated restaurants in the area for over 40 years. Maria enjoyed hosting and visiting with guests at Boy On A Dolphin on Pensacola Beach for many years. Maria will be remembered for her exquisite wit and generosity. Her children and grandchildren will forever be illuminated by the echoes of her wisdom. Just as her ancestors, she always gave to a hand that was open. Her kitchen was never without a gourmet feast available for her family and friends. Maria’s enduring beauty and wisdom continues to touch many lives. Maria is predeceased by her beloved parents, Konstantinos George Scourtes and Chrisoula Golfinopoulos Scourtes and her dear brother, William Jason Scourtes. She is survived by her husband, Speros Demetrios Athanasios of Gulf Breeze, FL, her children, Chrisoula Athanasios Hulion (Tony) of Pensacola, FL, Demetri Speros Athanasios of Los Angeles, CA, Stella Athanasios Malamo of Gulf Breeze, FL, Spero Athanasios Jr. of Pensacola, FL, her grandchildren, Maria Angelina Malamo, Anthony Chrisanthos Hulion, Daphne Katherine Hulion, her sister, Presbytera Antonia Scourtes Cleondis (Demetrios) of Montgomery, AL, her brother, George Konstantinos Scourtes of Malbis, AL, beloved cousin, Barbara Christodoulou of Athens, GR, and her many beautiful cousins, nieces, nephews and godchildren. The family wishes to thank Dr. Nicholas Drake, Dr. Evan Lewis, Dr. James Adams, the amazing Dr. John Sullivan and their teams at Baptist Hospital for their diligence, kindness and support during our difficult journey. A private family Trisagion and funeral service was held at Malbis Memorial Church on October 12. Father Matthew Carter and Father Sampson Kasapakis officiated. A burial will follow in Marousi, Athens, Greece. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Glioblastoma Foundation or UNICEF.
