Leta Irene Bowen

d. September 20, 2021

Leta Irene Bowen, age 86, a resident of Fairhope, Alabama, passed away Monday, September 20, 2021. Leta Irene Tucker Bowen was born and raised in Waco, Texas. She was voted Little Miss Waco in 1937 at the age of 2. Her baptism certificate, marriage certificate, and university degree are all signed by the same Baptist minister. She moved away from Waco after marriage and her graduation from Baylor University, embarking on an ever-changing life as a military wife, raising four children on the move around the US and abroad. During the family’s stay in Germany, Leta enrolled in the Wiesbaden Herzfeld School of Art. She was never seen without sketchbook or paintbrush after that. When the family moved to Fairhope in 1974, Leta found a wealth of painting opportunities just waiting to be captured on canvas. In addition to being an accomplished wife, mother and artist, Leta was a curious traveler, part-time teacher, banker and boater. She enjoyed good food, laughter, conversation, camping, fishing, color, music, busy times and quiet reflection. She met her challenges head-on and remained accountable for her actions and beliefs. Leta was a long-time member of St. James Church in Fairhope, singing joyfully in the choir. She was a member of the Eastern Shore Art Association and a founding member of the Bay Rivers Art Guild. Leta was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Bowen and daughter, Sara Zakutney. Leta is survived by her daughter, Rebecca “Becky” Bowen; sons, Andy Bowen (Cheryl), Tuck Bowen (Kim); son-in-law, David Zakutney; grandchildren, Taylor Bowen, Megan Lowery, Ali Zakutney, Lizzy Zakutney; great-grandchild, Jade Lowery; along with many other loving relatives and friends.
