Larry H. Hipsh, Sr., native and resident of Fairhope, AL. departed this earthly plane on Wednesday, August 21, 2024.
Larry, affectionately known as “Hippy” to his family and devoted group of friends graduated from Fairhope High School, then enlisted in the United States Army, where he became an instructor for the Army Rangers at Eglin Air Force Base. Exiting the Army after four years, Larry attended Spring Hill Community College, later graduated from Auburn University, and then attended law school at Cumberland School of Law in Homewood, AL, graduating in 1967. Larry was admitted to The Alabama Bar in 1967 and The Florida Bar in 1968, whereafter he moved his family to FL.
Larry's love for his family was evident in every aspect of his life. He raised his two sons in Gulf Breeze, FL with his first wife, Barbara where they spent their time boating, fishing, swimming, and running the family hunting camp in Little River, Alabama. Larry had a lifelong passion for the outdoors and that took him on adventures across the globe, from catching an 1,181-pound Black Marlin in Australia, bear hunting in Alaska, trips to the Caribbean and South America for other marlin species, and the unofficial world record for number of cast net throws. Larry was one of the first members of the Pensacola Big Game Fishing Club and spent countless hours in support of the club and in pursuit of the blue water fish in the Gulf of Mexico. A staunch conservationist, Larry was involved in several actions to clean up our local waters from Week's Bay to the Deep-Water Horizon oil spill and supported a robust local fishery. Larry’s support for the local military veterans was also a shining example of giving back and celebrating those who fought for this great county, as he was active with the Elks Lodge, the American Legion, and the VFW, where he was known for his infectious smile, larger-than-life persona, embellishment of stories, and provider of pro bono legal services to those veterans he was able to assist.
Larry is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Paul Hipsh and Lucille Redmond Hipsh, and sister, Judy Hipsh Benton.
Larry is survived by two sons, Larry Hipsh, Jr. (Beverly) of Spanish Fort, AL; Dale Hipsh of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; grandchildren, Larry Hipsh, III, Brandy Hipsh Medley (Chris) and Catherine Hipsh; multiple great-grandchildren; sister Janice Hipsh Hersman,(Ned), nieces Ashley Hersman Bach, and Jenny Hersman Dobson (Rad); his beloved dog, “Lady”, and many other loving family members and friends.
No formal service will be held, instead we will honor Larry's wishes and Larry will go to rest in his beloved Gulf of Mexico in fair weather and blue water.
