BIRINDELLI FAIRHOPE, ALABAMA Joseph Ray Birindelli, Jr., age 78, a resident of Fairhope, Alabama, passed away Thursday, January 27, 2022. Joseph is survived by his wife, Sarah Birindelli of Fairhope; daughters, Kelley Scott of Atlanta, Georgia, Amy McElroy (Ray) of Atlanta, Georgia; sons, Jay Birindelli, III (Shaun) of Fort Mitchell, Kentucky, Blake Birindelli (Paula) of Charlotte, North Carolina, Walter Scott of Los Angeles, California; brother, Ben Birindelli (Nancy) of Southern Shores, North Carolina; sister, Beverly Knott (John) of Las Vegas, Nevada; eight grandchildren; two great-grandsons; and a host of other living relatives and friends. He was a graduate of Virginia Military Institute. Joe was the Platoon Leader of the 3rdPlatoon of Charlie Troop of the 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment in Vietnam during 1967 and 1968. Joe was awarded 2 Silver Stars and a Bronze Star with āVā device for his heroism. He retired from the US Army Mobile District Corps of Engineers after 35 years. Joe was very active in military affairs. He was a Life Member and the Vice President of the 1st Squadron 4th Cavalry Association for many years. He was a Life Member of the Society of the 1st Infantry Division. He was also a very active Life Member of Military Order of Purple Heart, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, and the Joe Birindelli Chapter 864 Vietnam Veterans of America, Military Officers of America. Joe was a member of the team of veterans who worked tirelessly to build the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Battleship Park. He was instrumental in founding the Baldwin County chapter of Vietnam Veterans Association. He was key to establishing the Fairhope Veterans Day parade. Joe was the first Fairhope Veteran of the Year. He was also honored as the Mobile Veteran of the Year. He founded the Fairhope Local Troop Support Committee to help families of National Guard deployed to Iraq. Joe was co-chair of the effort to build the Fairhope Veterans Memorial. The memorial was truly a labor of love for Joe. He worked for nine years to bring it to completion in 2013. Joe was a kind and gentle man who loved to have fun. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Services will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, February 5th, at Veterans Memorial, Knoll Park, Fairhope, Alabama.
