John Evans Gutknecht was born on August 24, 1932 in New Orleans, Louisiana to parents Frederick J. Gutknecht and Earlie Bailey Gutknecht. He passed away on March 27, 2021 at the William F. Green Veterans Home in Bay Minette, Alabama. He was a graduate of Saint Stanislaus High School in 1950 in Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi, a graduate of Tulane University of New Orleans, Louisiana in 1954, with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps, then graduated from Louisiana State University in 1962 with master’s degree in Business Administration. John retired in 1985 from Kaiser Aluminum after working for 28 years. He then worked for twelve years at Georgia Southern University as a professor in the School of Business and director of the Master of Business Administration. Upon retirement in 1997 he moved to Fairhope, Alabama. He was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church and was involved in many volunteer activities, especially with children, the elderly and St. Lawrence. He is proceeded in death by his parents, brothers, Frederick Gutknecht, III and Edward Gutknecht and former wife, Lena J. Gutknecht. John is survived by his wife of 31 years, Harriet Hardee Gutknecht of Fairhope and children, Alice G. Farley (Tom) of Washington, D.C., M. Lynn Gutknecht (John) of Madison, Wisconsin, Lisa G. Darling (Corbin) of Golden, Colorado and Hans J. Gutknecht of Highland, New York. His grandchildren, Emily Pall, Joanna Farley, Helen Farley, Rebecca Farley, Clare Darling, Jackson Darling, Penelope Gutknecht and Hunter Gutknecht; great grandchildren, Rosie Pall and Tommy Pall, sister-in-law, Sandra Gutknecht; nieces and nephews, and many cherished and devoted friends. The family will be celebrating the life of John on Thursday, April 8, 2021, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens of Fairhope.
