Benson ELBERTA, ALABAMA John Benson, Jr died on Tuesday, March 5, 2019 at his home in Elberta, AL. Mr. Benson was 94. He was born in Snowhill, AL. Mr. Benson was a veteran having served in the U.S. Navy for 2 1/2 years, the U.S. Air Force for 28 years and the U.S. Air Force Reserves. Following his service to the country in the military, he was a driver for the VA and Red Cross delivering blood to hospitals. He was a member of the American Legion in Foley, VFW in Elberta, and a Charter Member of the AMVETS Post 2018 in Elberta. He is survived by his wife, Hazel D. Benson, of the family home. Children, Verdelle Murphy, Pensacola, FL, Johnnie Mae Gulley, Pensacola, Maceo Benson, Bloomington, IN, Julia Thomas, Chicago, IL, Pera Lee Thomas, Chicago, IL, John Wayne & Ginia Benson, Bloomington, IN, Dorothy Chapmen of Pewaukee, WI, Sharon Chapman, Hattiesburg, MS. Also surviving is a brother, Ruben Benson, Pensacola, FL. Plus, many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and beloved friends and family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Joh Benson, Sr and Hattie Lee Benson, a brother Alfred, a daughter Carrie and a son Tony. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2019, at 11:00 am at Crossway Baptist Church, Elberta. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 10:00 am until time of services. Military Honors will be rendered at Plantation Harbor Resort, RV Park, Elberta, AL following the church service. A Celebration of Life will be held following the Military Honors at the Plantation Harbor Resort Clubhouse. Inurnment will be held at a later date at Barrancas National Cemetery.
