Jesse Bounds Horst passed away peacefully on November 24th, 2024. He was born February 14th, 1942, to Thomas Armstrong Horst and Adele Bounds Horst. He attended University Military School through his junior year, then transferred to Schreiner Institute in Kerrville, Texas, where he graduated from high school in 1961. Schreiner was the site of many adventures and many entertaining stories.
He remained at Schreiner through his freshman year of college, then enrolled in Memphis State University, graduating in 1965 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance. He received his Master’s Degree in Finance from the University of Alabama in 1968.
In December 1963 he married Diane Tappan. They have one daughter, Dr. Anne Hedges Horst, of Washington DC, and two grandchildren, McChesney Goodall IV and John Horst Bunting.
J. B. was employed by American National Bank of Mobile in September 1968, and in May 1970 was named Investment Officer. He went on to hold numerous positions with American, including Senior Vice President and Cashier and Board Secretary.
He continued with its successor Amsouth Bank until his retirement December 31, 1993.
In January 1994, he started his own business, Independent Inspection & Management Service, later I.I.M.S., Inc., performing construction inspection and management services for banks and individual investors.
He served in several civic areas, including 16 years as a member of the U.S.S. Alabama Battleship Commission. He was Commissioner Emeritus, President of the Commission and President of the Battleship Foundation. He was also past president of Mobile Opera, INC. and co-chairman the American Cancer Society, Mobile Chapter.
J. B. was a member of two mystic societies and an enthusiastic participant in Mardi Gras festivities.
He was an avid fisherman, golfer and hunter. He loved all things maritime, and was an accomplished captain. He was an amazing cook, as anyone who ate his crabcakes, gumbo and ribs well knew.
J.B. had many joyful events in his life, but none more so than being with Diane, and seeing his daughter graduate twice from the University of Virginia, as an undergraduate and from the Medical School.
He is survived by his wife, Diane Tappan Horst, his daughter, Anne Hedges Horst, MD (Blair Bunting, MD) and two grandsons, McChesney Goodall IV and John Horst Bunting, he is also survived by his brother-in-law, Craig Tappan, of Fairhope (Cathe Bissman), his sister-in-law, Cynthia Adams Tappan, and his nieces and nephews.
He was pre-deceased by his brother, Thomas A. Horst, Jr. (Tom), his sister, Adele Lyle Horst Campbell (Mrs. Jack W.) and his brother in-law, Dr. Douglas Tappan.
There will be a private family service at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Mobile, and for internment at Spring Hill Memorial Cemetery at a later date. The family requests any memorials be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Mobile, the USS Alabama Battleship Foundation or UMS/Wright.
