James Woodrow Hummer, 98, of Fairhope, AL, passed away at 4:22 PM on Monday, December 9, 2019 at North Baldwin Infirmary in Bay Minette, AL. Born November 11, 1921 in Henryville, IN, he was the son of William Andrew Hummer and Sarah Elsie (Montgomery) Hummer. Mr. Hummer grew up on a farm in Henryville, IN. He served in the US Army from 1939 to 1945. While serving in World War II. He fought in Normandy, Northern France, and Rhineland. He was a recipient of 3 bronze stars and received a battle field promotion to Sergeant Major during the Battle of the Bulge. After he served in Japan as part of The American Occupation Force, he moved with his wife to Southern CA. He received his bachelor’s degree and subsequently went to work with the State of CA in the Attorney General’s Office as a Financial Auditor. Mr. Hummer moved to Fairhope, AL after the death of his wife. He was an avid bridge player and became a supporter of Alabama football while living in Fairhope. Survived by sisters, Helen Martin of Mobile, AL, Mary Herzog of Fairhope, AL, Sue Kostelecky of Slidell, LA, and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Masako, brother, David Hummer, and sister, Margaret Hummer. Special thanks to the William F. Green State Veterans Home for their care during the last few months of his life. Pastor Wilma Bone will conduct funeral services at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 14, 2019 at Adams Family Funeral Home & Crematory in Henryville, with burial to follow at Mt. Moriah Cemetery.
