Jack B. Campbell, M.D. January 28, 1934 - January 27, 2025

Jack B. Campbell, M.D., passed away peacefully at his home in Fairhope, Alabama, on January 27, 2025, with his son and daughter by his side.

Dr. Campbell was born on January 28, 1934, in a rustic farmhouse in the Sharon Community north of Laurel, Mississippi, to Ralph P. Campbell and Luella White Campbell. He attended public schools in Laurel, where he excelled in academics and extracurricular activities. A dedicated member of the Laurel High School band, he was also active in student affairs, serving as an officer and earning several medals for his musical performances in state competitions.

Following high school, he attended Centenary College, University of Mississippi, and subsequently earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Millsaps College. He later pursued his passion for medicine, earning his M.D. from the University of Tennessee at Memphis. He completed his internship at John Gaston Hospital in Memphis before realizing his calling in surgery. Dr. Campbell moved to Roanoke, Virginia, to complete his general surgery residency and later returned to Jackson, Mississippi, where he became board-certified and practiced for over two decades.

Dr. Campbell was a trailblazer in his field, becoming the first surgeon to reside in South Jackson and serve at Hinds General Hospital from its opening day. He held numerous leadership positions, including Chief of Surgery, Chief of Staff, and Staff Liaison to the Board of Trustees. His surgical career was cut short in 1988 due to a stroke, but his passion for life remained steadfast.

Following his retirement, Dr. Campbell and his wife, Glenda, relocated to Martha’s Vineyard, where they had maintained a vacation home for years. He quickly became an integral part of the community, serving as a Deacon at the Federated Church, a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals, and the sole physician on the Board of Health. One of his proudest achievements was his election to the Board of Trustees of the Martha’s Vineyard Preservation Trust, later earning the distinction of Life Trustee.

In his later years, he and Glenda moved to Fairhope, Alabama, to be closer to family. After Glenda’s passing in 2004, he continued to find joy in his family, his community, and the lasting impact of his medical career.

Dr. Campbell is survived by his son, Ben (Mary Jane) Campbell of Hot Springs, Arkansas; his daughter, Heather Campbell of Olympia, Washington; his granddaughter, Ashley Bryan (T.C.) of Fort Smith, Arkansas; his grandson, Joseph (Cate) of Fayetteville, Arkansas; his granddaughter, Grace Campbell (Nirasean) of Davis, California; his great-grandsons, Ravi Guarino and Brooks Bryan; and several cousins.

Following cremation, his ashes will be interred alongside his wife in the Memorial Garden of the Federated Church on Martha’s Vineyard.

Dr. Campbell’s legacy of service, dedication, and compassion will live on through his family, his patients, and the many lives he touched throughout his career.
