George Taylor “Ted” Smith, born March 30th, 1946, passed away peacefully in his sleep on August 11th, 2024. His life was marked by his passion for knowledge, love for his family, and a generous spirit.
Ted was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar Smith & Florence Everett Smith; and sisters, Emmie Prewett & B.K. Keith. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Joy Hedgepath Smith; his children, Michael Smith (Aubrey) of Alvin, TX, Matthew Smith of Austin, TX, Caroline Keener (Stone) of Fairhope, AL, Daniel Smith of Fairhope, AL and his cherished grandchildren, Helen & Beatrice Smith (Michael) and John Keener (Caroline). As well as his siblings, Lloyd Smith of Fairhope, Mitchell Smith (Cheryl) of Louisiana, Marshall Smith (Linda) of Fairhope, Thomas Smith (Marti) of Daphne, Eileen Smith of Mobile, David Smith (Judy) of Mobile; nieces;nephews along with many other loving relatives and friends.
After earning his Master’s Degree in Science from the University of Memphis, Ted embarked on a distinguished career as a Petroleum Geologist in the Oil and Gas Industry until he retired. His work was not just a job, but a personal calling, as he enjoyed understanding and studying the earth. Ted’s interests were rich and varied as his personality. He was a dedicated member of his church, he lived his faith through action with a loyal and generous spirit. A true family man at heart, he also harbored a love for sailing, reveling in a love for adventure and the tranquility of the open water.
As we bid farewell to Ted, we celebrate the extraordinary life of a man who was truly one of a kind, and we take solace in the memories of a life that has exemplified good humor, dedication, generosity and faith.
