Knowing compassion comes from understanding. Understanding comes from experience. Experience comes with either exuberant triumph or unspeakable pain and sorrow[TC1] . George M. Godwin died on November 9, 2023, the day we had to let our hero go. He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Ann R. Godwin; daughter, Theresa Chisolm (Jayson), sons, Kevin Godwin (Michelle), and Corbett Godwin (Vanessa) Grandchildren, Kelsey Luke, Ashley Chisolm – Whitten, Jessica Chisolm, Noah Chisolm, Alex Powers, Ashleigh Powers, Ryleigh Godwin, Owen Godwin, and one great grandchild, Judah Luke, Siblings; Barbara Godwin Blair and family, Tommy Godwin and family, and Dwayne Godwin and family. George was born in Brewton, Alabama on July 25, 1946, but spent most of his childhood in Castleberry, Alabama. He was an avid athlete playing basketball for the Blue Devils of Conecuh County High School. He married his high school sweetheart, Ann, on June 11, 1966. He attended Jeff Davis Junior College for a short time before he left for Vietnam. George was a decorated soldier, a Green Beret of the Special Forces, and received a Purple Heart during his service. Upon returning from Vietnam, George took a job with South Central Bell. He worked for South Central Bell for thirty-one years. George and Ann raised their children in Brewton and Fairhope and returned to Fairhope to retire. George was a gifted carpenter, a skilled electrician, and could fix anything under the sun. He helped several family and friends build their own homes, as well as other projects. He was always on the phone with one of his children explaining how to fix this, that or the other. George had 8 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild he was very proud of and his eyes lit up when he got to spend time with them. George had a heart of gold and could make his family laugh hysterically over just about anything. George was loved and admired by anyone who met him. He loved and adored his wife, Ann. They were inseparable for fifty-seven years. Our hearts are broken, as there is nothing that can fill this kind of void, but we look forward to seeing him again one day and we just know he is already building something. A graveside service will be held November 14, 2023 at 11:00 am at Fairhope Memorial Gardens on Greeno Road in Fairhope, Alabama. The service will be officiated by Kelsey Luke. Pallbearers will be Noah Chisolm, Alex Powers, Carl Davis, Ryleigh Godwin, Ashleigh Powers, and Jessica Chisolm. Alternate pallbearers; Daren Hall, Jacky Reaves.
