George Haynes Atkins, 87, of Spanish Fort passed away peacefully on November 30, 2019, at Westminster Village in Spanish Fort while surrounded by family and enjoying Auburn’s Iron Bowl Victory. Mr. Atkins was born January 8, 1932, to George Marshall and Clara Haynes Atkins of East Lake, AL. He graduated from Woodlawn High School in 1950, and attended Marion Military Institute his college freshen year. He earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) in 1954, and served for two years in the United States Army. For almost all of his career he was happily employed by the US Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District. He retired as Chief of the Hydrology and Hydraulics Branch. He and Sabra Stough, his Auburn sweetheart, were married in 1955. Their three children, Marylu Garcia, Haynes Atkins (Mavis), Ashley Sweetland (Cody) survive him. George Atkins will be dearly missed. He was a good and honorable man. He loved his God, his family, his country, his friends, singing in the choir, fishing, and Auburn football. In addition to his three children, Mr. Atkins is survived by his grandchildren: Jenni Garcia, Sabra Rochell (Sam), William Sweetland, Celeste Atkins, and great granddaughter Lucy Rochell. Visitation for Mr. Atkins will be held at Spanish Fort Presbyterian Church (6620 Spanish Fort Blvd., Spanish Fort, AL 32567) on December 5, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. immediately followed by the service at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a gift be made to: Spanish Fort Presbyterian Church, Baldwin Animal Rescue, or American Foundation for the Blind.
