Frederick “Ted” Grist Stickney, passed way in his sleep on October 28, 2017. Ted is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Avos, his sister Louise, his brother Cliff (Valerie), his son Frederick Grist Stickney VI (Amy), his cousin Jenny Mullins, his nieces, nephews, and many friends. Ted was born on January 7, 1942, in Mobile, Alabama. Ted was a retired business owner and longtime resident of Daphne, Alabama. He graduated from Andalusia High School in 1960, where he was named Most Talented, was the drum major, and played on the basketball team. He matriculated to the University of the South – Sewanee where he was a member of the class of 1964 and a Sigma Nu. For many years he attended college fairs representing Sewanee as well as awarding the Sewanee Award at Bayside Academy. He loved living close to Mobile Bay, ever since spending summers vacationing on Belrose Avenue in Daphne as a child. If you were “early” to a jubilee, his floundering light was probably the first one you would see. He loved shrimping in the Bay, pulling his net behind his Stauter. He considered it a privilege every time he went hunting with his friends outside of Greensboro, Alabama. One of his other loves was antiques. He was a renowned expert on coin silver and southern furniture, often sought out to help identify makers marks and patterns. He was proud of his collection of Herman Bischoff sketches. He was a talented cook. He was a past president of the City of Mobile Swim Association. He ran for the Daphne City Council in the 1970’s, remarking later that losing that race was one of the best things that ever happened to him. He was a gentleman who did what he could to help out many fine people. He loved the dogs he raised over the years. He was funny and had a wonderful laugh. A service to celebrate his life will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Daphne, AL. this Friday, November 3, 2017, at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, we ask that any donations be sent to the University of the South Annual Fund or the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church - Daphne Building Fund.
