It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Frank M. Connell of Fairhope, AL who died peacefully in his home on June 12, 2024, at the age of 89.
A visitation honoring Frank's life will be held on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Wolf-Bayview Funeral Home located at 19698 Greeno Rd., Fairhope, AL. A short visitation will also take place on Thursday, June 20, 2024, from 9:30am to 10:00am at St. Lawrence Catholic Church located at 370 S. Section St., Fairhope, AL. A funeral Mass will immediately follow from 10:00am to 11:00am, followed by a reception at the church at 11:00am. Internment will be at 2:00pm at the Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spanish Fort, located at 34904 AL-225, Spanish Fort, AL.
Frank was born February 23, 1935, in Norwalk, CT, to his late parents, Herbert Stanley Connell and Elizabeth Hobbs Russell. Frank is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Elvira Tautz Connell, his brother Robert Connell (Diane), his five children: Larissa Kelly (Colm), Paul Connell (Cindy), Frank Connell, Jr., Valentina Barker (Scott), and Elizabeth Chisenhall (Lance), his grandchildren: Alicia Hanson (Travis), Natasha Springer (Jason), Mitchell Barker(Michelle), Monica Kirsch (Jake), Nathaniel Barker (Darby), Daniel “Toby” Barker (Emma), Maria Barker, Natalie Lamm (Michael), Deirdre Looney, Hannah Looney, Ryan Looney, Brian Connell, Kevin Connell, Frank Connell, III (Megan), Jonathon Chisenhall (Abbey), Dylan Chisenhall, Adrianna Chisenhall, and 17 great grandchildren. His legacy lives on through his family whom he loved and cherished dearly.
He is preceded in death by his father, mother, brother Herbert Stanley "Jimmy" Connell, Jr., and grandson Joseph Barker.
A man of exceptional dedication and service, Frank graduated from Fairhope High School in 1954, the University of Alabama in 1958 and the University of Richmond in 1972. He served in the U.S. Army with honor and distinction from 1959 to 1979, including two tours in Vietnam, where he earned numerous medals. After retiring as a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army, he worked as a Logistics Engineer with Jaycor from 1979-1998
His commitment to community service extended beyond his military years. Most recently, he was involved in The Army Historical Foundation, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), America Legion, Knights of Columbus, Red Elephant Club, Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), 2018 Fairhope Veteran of the Year, 1987 Citizen of the Year, Herndon, Virginia (for his work in the “Just Say No” program in local schools), The Armed Forces Honor Guard, Fairhope Public Library Volunteer and sang in the St Lawrence Church choir. In addition to the above, he held many board positions within these groups.
Frank will always be remembered as a loving husband and father, for his selflessness, dedication, and unwavering commitment to his community and country. May his legacy of service inspire us all to make a positive impact in the world around us. Since Frank was heavily involved in many causes, feel free to donate to any that he volunteered for in his name in lieu of flowers.
