Floyd "Gibby" Gibson Jones

Floyd Gibson “Gibby” Jones February 9, 1939 - April 5, 2024 

Floyd “Gibby” Jones, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle passed away on April 5, 2024, at the age of 85. Son of the late Gibson Leonard and Edna Louise White Jones, Gibby was born on February 9, 1939, in Fairfield, Alabama. 

Gibby attended Fairhope High School in Fairhope, AL and went on to serve in the Alabama National Guard. In 1961, he married Emily Cecile Zyriek, the love of his life and the woman with whom he would spend the next 62½ years. They moved to Dallas, Texas in 1965 where Gibby worked for the Collins Radio Company as an electronics technician. In 1976, Gibby and Cecile settled in Zachary, Louisiana with their two sons, Andy and Tim, and daughter, Jennie. In 2003, Gibby retired from a 27-year career as an instrument technician at the paper mill in St. Francisville, LA. In his spare time, Gibby was an amateur radio operator and enjoyed working with electronics. He had a natural gift for mechanics as well; he liked taking things apart to see how they worked, and then putting them back together. He loved to spend time tinkering in his workshop and working outside with his tractor. He and Cecile enjoyed trips to Arizona, traveling to spend time with family in Tucson and to share deep experiences in nature, including in the Grand Canyon. The desert held a special place in Gibby’s heart. Gibby was a strong, kind, and loving man, and while he was considered “a man of few words,” there was no question of the depth of his love for his family.

Gibby is survived by his wife Emily Cecile Jones, sons Gibson “Andy” (Melanie) Jones and Timothy (Terry) Jones, daughter Jennifer (Barry) Gray, and grandchildren Megan and Evan Jones. Surviving siblings include brother John “Bill” Jones of Foley, AL, sisters Marilyn “Lynn” Cox and Edwina (Carl) Hanson of Fairhope, AL, and brother Richard (Robi) Jones of Fairhope, AL. Last but not least, he is survived by his special kitty, Ambrosia. 

Services will be held at Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home in Fairhope, AL on Saturday, April 13, 2024. Visitation will be from 12:00-2:00 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Gibby’s memory to the charity of your choice.
