Eugene Fred Garthwait, a cherished father, grandfather, and community member, passed away on February 5, 2025, in Daphne, Alabama, at the age of 76. Born on September 17, 1948, Eugene proudly served as a U.S. Army Veteran, embodying the dedication and commitment that are hallmarks of military service.
Eugene was an active member of the American Legion, where he contributed to the well-being and support of fellow veterans. His faith was a guiding light in his life, and he was a devoted member of the Five Rivers Church, finding strength and solace in his spiritual community.
Family meant everything to Eugene. He is survived by his beloved sons, Clayton Garthwait of Daphne, AL, and Spencer (Beth) Garthwait of Gulfport, MS, as well as his daughter, Loren Barbour of Mobile, AL. He was a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren: Aaron, Alex, Olivia, Luke, Isabella, Michael Patrick, Stephen, Gabriel, and Zachary. Eugene also welcomed the joy of being a great-grandfather to his cherished great-grandchild, Leslie.
His life was rich with passions that included being a choral enthusiast and a devoted fan of the Chicago Cubs, reflecting his vibrant personality and zest for life.
Eugene's legacy will be remembered not only through his family but also through the multitude of lives he touched during his time on earth. He is preceded in death by his brother, Warren Garthwait, Jr.; his sister, Anette Zoellick; and his son, Jason Ehrhardt. Each of these relationships added depth to his life, and they will be reunited in the memories of those who knew and loved him.
Eugene Fred Garthwait leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and commitment that will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
A celebration of life memorial services will be held from the chapel of Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home, Daphne, on Friday, February 14, 2025, at 12:30 PM. The family will receive friends from 11:30 PM until the service time. A committal service will be held at 2:00 PM at Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Spanish Fort.
