Elwood “Woody” M. Lowell passed away peacefully at home on August 20, 2019 with all of his family present. He was born in Fairhope on October 22, 1931 and spent his childhood enjoying all that the beautiful Eastern Shore had to offer. After graduating from Fairhope High School he immediately joined the U.S. Air Force and enjoyed a 20-year career that included deployments to Burton Wood AFB and Weathersfield AFB in England, and positions in Austin, TX and Biloxi, MS and Algiers, LA. He spent his last part of his Air Force career in Viet Nam and south east Asia. He spent nearly 15 years with the State of Alabama Employment Services where he served as state president of the International Association for Employment Personnel Services. He fully retired in 1984 to enjoy fishing, gardening, and his favorite past-time – wood working. Woody and his wife Doreen have been long time members of the St. James community serving in several different capacities spanning nearly 50 years. In one of those capacities Woody hand-made hundreds of wooden crosses for the youth graduating from confirmation classes. He is survived by beloved wife of nearly 68 years, Doreen; brother, Hugh; sister, Caroline; daughter, Karren Richardson; sons, Stephen and Chris Lowell; 9 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 24, 2019 at St. James Episcopal Church at 10:00 a.m. with visitation beginning at 9:15 a.m. Interment will follow the service at Memory Gardens of Fairhope. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. James. Pall bearers will be Ken and Matt Richardson, Joshua and Jonathan Lowell, Matt Georges, and Will Chappell.
