Elizabeth Koehler Somer, age 90, a resident of Foley passed away Monday, January 31, 2022.

She was born in Elberta, AL on January 13, 1932 and was the daughter of Erwin A. and Gertrude Bayless Koehler. Betty, as she was known, moved to Jacksonville, FL in 1954  and married John Somer and started their life together and her long career with Prudential Insurance Company.  After her retirement and the death of her husband, Betty returned to Baldwin County in 2004 and settled in Foley, AL.

Betty’s lifelong interest was porcelain art and she enjoyed painting and teaching china painting.  She was state president of the Florida World Organization of China Painters for two years and she held numerous offices in china painting organizations. 

Betty and her husband, John loved flowers and specialized in growing orchids and bromeliads in their greenhouse in Jacksonville, FL.  She was an active member of Foley United Methodist Church and a past board member of the Baldwin County Heritage Museum.  She loved God and people.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Erwin and Gertrude Koehler; husband, John Somer; brothers, Warren, Marshall and Erwin (Butch).

She is survived by her brother, Paul (Bill); her husband’s sister-in-law, Rosie Fleischman and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held in at 2:00 PM, Friday, February 4, 2022 in the chapel at Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home, Foley, AL with Betty’s nephew, Dr. Shane Koehler officiating.  The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to service time.

Interment will follow in Elberta Public Cemetery, Elberta, AL
