Dr. Thomas Hubbard Yancey

Dr. Thomas Hubbard Yancey died quietly at his home on March 15, 2021, surrounded by his family. He was born to Dorothy Hubbard Yancey and Dr. Gautier Conde Yancey on February 10, 1930 in his hometown, Tuskegee, Alabama. He is proceeded in death by his parents, sister Dorothy Virginia Yancey Mayfield and brother, Gautier Conde Yancey, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jeanne Susanne Johnson Yancey, his daughter Dr. Suzanne Yancey Bush (Greg), son, Thomas Benjamin (Ben) Yancey, granddaughter Dr. Mary Elizabeth Bush Joyce (Tim) and grandson Thomas Alexander Bush. He is also survived by his nephews Walter Gautier Mayfield and Thomas Harrison Mayfield. He also leaves his Johnson family, nieces and nephews of which he delighted in teaching them of life on Mobile Bay. Known as an avid outdoorsman and wildlife conservationist, Tom Yancey gain much of his love and knowledge from his father and mother. He was educated in the Tuskegee Public School System graduating high school in 1948. Dr. Yancey followed in his father’s footsteps first graduating from Auburn University (API) in 1953 with a degree in pharmacy and then on to complete a medical degree at the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham in 1957. He continued his education in a surgery residency at the Mobile General Hospital for two years. He served two years in the Public Health Service as Navy lieutenant at the Marine Hospital in New Orleans. In 1961, after completion of his service, Dr. Yancey moved his family to Fairhope, Alabama and join Dr. HC (Moon) Mullins in a family practice which later became Bay Medical Clinic. He completed his 38 years in private practice at that time with Dr. Ferdinand Hugo Dietze. He remained in contact with both colleagues over the years. Dr. Yancey, affectionately known as “Dr. Tom”, sincerely loved his patients and had much appreciation for “their unwavering support,” and the staff at Bay Medical and Thomas Hospital for “the dedication to patient care and support in his practice of medicine. Carol Long LPN, earned her angel wings working alongside Dr. Yancey until the end of his career. Dr. Yancey was very proud of his contributions as a physician with the following: the Fairhope Football team, the original board of directors of Bayside Academy, Community Faculty for a new medical school at the University of South Alabama, and the Vestry at St. James Episcopal Church. In his retirement, he enjoyed his work on the governor appointed AHEC committee, and he took great pride in creating the family tree farm, Glenncrest, as a treasure forest. He was always happy in the woods with a turkey call or with a fishing pole in his hand. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 27, 2021, at St. James Episcopal Church in Fairhope at 10:00 am, followed by a graveside service in the St. James Memorial Garden. Social distancing guidelines will be observed. The family are thankful for the support of his physicians, especially Dr. Randy Hall and Southern Care Hospice Services, Visiting Angels, St. James Episcopal Church and the many friends and family who visited during these last months. Memorial gifts may be sent to St. James Episcopal Church, Thomas Hospital, or the Alabama Wildlife Association.
