Dr. John Boyd Douglas Sr., age 88, a long-time resident of south Alabama, died Wednesday December 21st, 2022. Dr. Douglas was preceded in death by his parents, Pearl Lee and Barney Douglas, and his wife of 60 years, Barbara Ann Douglas. Dr. Douglas is survived by his three children: Boyd (Largay) Douglas of Battles Wharf, Alabama, Michael (Murray) Douglas of Fairhope, Alabama, Brown (Kathryn) Douglas of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, ten grandchildren, who affectionally called him “Papa”: Taylor (Laura) Douglas of Mobile, Alabama, Ebie (Gaines) Bates of Mobile, Alabama, Murphy Douglas of Battles Wharf, Alabama, Colin (Chynna) Douglas of Fairhope, Alabama, Mac Douglas of Fairhope, Alabama, Maysie Douglas of Fairhope, Alabama, Benton Douglas of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Grace Douglas of Birmingham, Alabama, Charlie Douglas of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Joe Douglas of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and one great grandchild: Mae Claire Douglas of Mobile, Alabama. Dr. Douglas was born on January 16th, 1934, in Ellisville, Mississippi and grew up in Mobile, Alabama. He graduated from Murphy High School in 1951 and completed his undergraduate degree at Vanderbilt University in 1955. He later graduated from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1958. Following his graduation from medical school, he married Barbara Ann Baker. Dr. Douglas served as a captain in the army in Hawaii from 1960 to 1962. Upon returning from his tour, he completed his medical residency in Birmingham, Alabama at the University of Alabama Birmingham. After completion of his residency, Dr. Douglas practiced at Internal Medicine Associates from 1962 to 1986 at Mobile Infirmary. As an avid sports fan, Dr. Douglas enjoyed serving as the football teams’ doctor at his alma mater, Murphy High School, for many years. In 1986, he moved his practice to Providence Hospital and stayed there until 1992. In 1992, Dr. and Mrs. Douglas moved to Baldwin County. Along with this move, he moved his practice to Thomas Hospital where he retired in 2012. Upon his retirement, Dr. Douglas achieved 50 years practicing medicine. Dr. Douglas dedicated a great deal of his career to treating patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Papa loved nothing more than spending time with his family, whether it was enjoying a Mobile Bay sunset, watching sports (often two at once), or sharing a meal. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Rheumatology Research Foundation or Murphy High School. There will be a private memorial service at later date.
