Dorothy Moore Carpenter (Dot) of Helena, Arkansas died on February 6, 2020, three days before her 93rd birthday. Daughter of Iola Hooker Moore and Morgan Moore, Dot and her three sisters were residents of Waco Texas. At Baylor University in Waco, she met and married James Robert Carpenter Jr. (Bob) in 1947. Dot and Bob established their home in Elaine, Arkansas where Bob founded Delta Hardware, a business now approaching one hundred years of Carpenter mercantile ownership. Their family included three children: Roxanna, Jim, and Gary. Dot’s love for music inspired generations. It began with the Waco High School Glee Club. She sang alto in the Elaine Baptist Church choir and participated in Messiah concerts. From the Everly Brothers to Verdi to Handel, music was a treasured gift she would continue to share with children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Dot was an active participant in the community and her children’s activities. As Parent Teacher Association (PTA) president, she led the members to fiscal prosperity. She also served as a substitute teacher in the Elaine schools. Dot taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, supported Little League baseball, and led Scout troops. In 1983, Dot and Bob moved to Helena, Arkansas. Their love of golf became a favorite pastime and golf vacations with friends were a source of relaxation and fun. Throughout her time as a Helena resident, Dot remained involved in the community. As a certified Master Gardener, Dot always cultivated beautiful flowers. Evidence of her dedication to gardening could be seen for decades on hole number ten at the Helena Country Club. She successfully hosted several exchange students. All students who lived in her home became devotees. For a brief time, Dot and Eloise Watson were proprietors of the Butterfly in downtown Helena. She was preceded in death by her devoted Bob and her son, James Robert Carpenter III. She is survived by her children, Roxanna Carpenter and Gary Carpenter, her grandchildren Stephanie Trapp Francis (Edward) and Joshua Carpenter Trapp (Elizabeth), and her seven great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at Sunset Memorial Cemetery on Saturday, February 15, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Avenue, 16th Floor, New York, New York, 10001.
