Darry Dale Andrew

Darry Dale Andrew, formerly of Savanna IL, died August 12, 2023, at Thomas Hospital in Fairhope AL. Darry, who was nicknamed Andy by close friends, was best known as Coach Andrew to the many students and athletes he had taught, coached and mentored throughout his 32 years as a high school teacher and coach. Darry was born to Mildred C Johnson on October 19, 1942, in Upland IN. He was a talented athlete who loved all sports with his favorite being basketball. After graduating Savanna High School in 1960, Darry joined the Army. He was stationed at Coleman Barracks in Mannheim Germany where he ultimately met his soulmate, Rita Hussong. After a whirlwind romance, they married on August 2, 1963. They made Savanna IL their home for the first nine years of their marriage and became parents to Angie, Ricky and Nicole. Together they poured their love, energy and time into raising their kids and giving them wonderful life experiences and memories, which will be cherished forever. Darry and Rita loved traveling together visiting both new and familiar places around the world, always returning to Savanna and lifelong friends. Darry began his teaching career in 1972 in Chadwick IL and retired in 2004 at Mannheim High School in Mannheim Germany. During that time, he coached boys' basketball and football and girls' soccer. He loved mentoring young people and up until his dying day he spoke often of his players and was so proud of all their future achievements. Oh, the stories he shared about childhood friends, past teams, players, fellow coaches and educators! Darry is survived by his three children Angie (Tom) Pritchett, Ricky (Mitzi) Andrew, and Nicole Angel. He is also survived by grandchildren Jeff (Stephanie) Pritchett, Steve (Hailey) Pritchett, Taylor Morfey, Paige Morfey, Autumn (Archie) Keomanivong, Chloe Andrew, Caida (Rob) Berger, Taylor Toifel, Isabella Andrew, Stefan Andrew, Slade Andrew, Jewel Andrew, Drew Angel, Camryn Angel and Parker Angel. Great-grandchildren, Jordin, Sophia, Jackson, Willow, Taiberius, Oakleigh and Lilah. Darry was preceded in death by his beautiful wife, Rita, sister Sherry and mother.
