Clifford Balzli, Sr.

Clifford Joseph Balzli, P.E. was born in Mobile, Alabama on November 18, 1929 to Emil Michael Balzli and Theresa Loretta Stewart Balzli. After graduating Murphy high school in Mobile, he went to Auburn University for two years, and then transferred to University of Alabama, where he graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He then enlisted in the US Airforce and served as a second Lieutenant during the Korean War, stationed in Yak Montana. In 1952, Clifford married Mary Catherine Floyd. Cliff and Catherine had 8 children. He was an energetic, brilliant entrepreneur, founding Balco Mechanical Contractors and Electrical Mechanical Contractors Inc., and at one time co- owned Allstate Glass and Birmingham Investment Realty Inc., among many other businesses. His infatuation with real estate investment/development continued until his passing. Cliff served on numerous boards including as Commissioner of the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park. He was a man of many interests and talents. He loved to sail, pilot small multi-prop planes, play golf and tennis, and dominate in a weekly poker game. He will be greatly missed in both the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay and the Birmingham areas as well as to everyone that he has touched throughout his life’s journey. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Robert “Butch” and Emil Jr., and his son, Jonathan. He is survived by his wife Etelka, and 7 children, Barrie (Eric, deceased), Clifford Jr. (Debbie), Beth Imorde (Jim), Gregory (Brenda), Julie Walker (Mike), Adam, and Benjamin. He has 13 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 10, 2018 at 7 p.m. at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Fairhope, Alabama, with visitation starting at 5:30pm in the St. Lawrence room.
