Dr. Cindy Sheets 12-15-1956 to 08-07-2023 We mourn the passing of Cindy Sheets, age 66, who courageously fought non-smokers’ lung cancer for two and one-half years. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband Jonathan Scammell (Daphne AL), her son Alex and his wife Lyndsey and their daughter Aubrey (Williamsburg VA), her daughter Emily (Washington DC), and her son Adam (Austin TX). She is survived by her mother Elizabeth Bryan (Tampa FL), her sisters Melanie and her family (Crystal River, FL), Mari and her family (Morrisville, NC), Amee and her family (Tampa FL), and her brother Mark and his family (Ft. Myers, FL). Cindy was born in Denver CO and enjoyed a childhood living all over the country until the family settled in Ft. Myers FL. She attended Cypress Lake High School before entering the University of Florida as a Chemistry major. She was accepted into the Junior Honors Program in the medical school in Gainesville, where she began her career in medicine. After graduating from the University of Florida medical school in 1981, Cindy went on to a research fellowship in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Yale University School of Medicine. She then joined the Pediatrics residency program at Yale-affiliated Bridgeport Hospital in Bridgeport CT where she also served as Chief Resident. Since moving to the Mobile area in 1986, Cindy has held positions with Prime Health, Pediatrics Associates, and the University of South Alabama. She was renowned for compassionate care of all patients regardless of socioeconomic status. She was also recognized as a dedicated teacher receiving awards for the Best Private Attending and Best Faculty Attending from multiple cohorts of residents at the University of South Alabama. While active in her pediatric practice, she was also a selfless wife, mother, grandmother, and contributor to Christ the King Catholic School, where she was the Fifth Grade Math Team Coach, a Science Olympiad Coach, and President of the Parent-Teacher Association. Cindy’s other passion was the Reach Out and Read Program at the University of South Alabama. She was one of the first pediatricians to become a Reach Out and Read Program Provider in the State of Alabama. Reach Out and Read is an early literacy program that provides books and literacy guidance to children. Cindy initiated and personally supported the program for over 17 years touching countless families in the Mobile area. Cindy’s family would like to recognize the doctors and nurses at the Mitchell Cancer Institute and University Hospital for their care and encouragement during her illness. A memorial service remembering Cindy is planned for the Fall. In the meantime, in recognition of her unwavering devotion to serving the children of Mobile, please consider a donation to The Reach Out and Read Program, Office of Development, 650 Clinic Drive, TRP III, Ste. 1500, Mobile, AL 36688.
