Charles E. Loury, RPh., also known as Jim and Doc to family and friends, reached his journey’s end in Daphne, Alabama, on February 5, 2021, at the age of 92. Jim was born December 10, 1928, in Los Angeles, California. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Army Medical Corp. Jim was a proud graduate of the University of Southern California (USC) College of Pharmacy, class of 1953. He was a practicing and registered pharmacist in California, Nevada, and Alabama for 60 years, and was a past President of the Orange County Pharmaceutical Association in California. He owned three professional pharmacies in Southern California. Jim retired and moved to Baldwin County, Alabama, in 1994 with his lovely wife, Mary A. Loury. After retiring, he worked as a relief pharmacist for the Wal-Mart pharmacy in Daphne, Alabama, for 15 years and was a staff pharmacist at Ozanam Charitable Pharmacy in Mobile, Alabama, until he permanently retired at the age of 85. Jim learned his interest in becoming a pharmacist from his paternal grandfather B.C. Loury, RPh. His many interests beyond pharmacy included sailing, gardening, and sports (mainly football) at both the collegiate and high-school levels. He also had a life-long love affair with automobiles. As a local small business owner in Fullerton, California, he sponsored youth sports teams and horse-riding competitions. He was an avid and devoted fan of the USC Trojan football team for 70 years. One of Jim’s most endearing qualities was his keen sense of humor. He learned from his grandpa B.C that humor can sometimes be as therapeutic as a dispensed pill or elixir. So, it was fitting that Jim never missed an opportunity to make others smile. Family and friends were always close to his heart and he always made a point to place a telephone call to those he loved on their birthdays. One of his life-long mottos was, “It’s fun to be nice to people,” which he had inscribed on a plaque that hung on the wall in his pharmacies. Jim’s favorite expression was secundum artem, which is a Latin phrase meaning “according to the art.” Jim was a member of the Ave Choir at Christ the King Church in Daphne, a member of the Victorville, California, Masonic Lodge 634; a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason; and a member of the Al Malaikah Shrine in Los Angeles, California. Jim is preceded in death by Deon M. Dann (sister), and Neal H. Loury (brother). His caring nature and affable personality will be lovingly remembered by his wife Mary A. Randolph Loury; his children, Kathryn L. Loury Homel (Jay), David J. Loury (Dana), and Marla L. Loury Delaney (Michael); and his five grandchildren. A memorial service and a celebration of his wonderful life will be held on June 11, 2021, 11:00 am at Christ the King Catholic Church, 1505 Main St., Daphne, AL with a visitation beginning at 10:00am. Memorial contributions may be made to Christ the King Church (mailing address 711 College Ave., Daphne, AL 36526 or https://www.ctkdaphne.org/contributions), the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (www.heart.org), or Shriner’s Hospitals for Children ( https://www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org/shc)
