Chaplain (COL, Ret) Phillip Jacques Cassibry, age 86, a Spanish Fort, Alabama resident, went home to heaven on 4 April 2023. Phillip was born to Kenny Lee and Lucille (Gentry) Cassibry on 29 August 1936 in Whistler, Alabama. He graduated from Vigor High School, Mississippi College, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, and New York Theological Seminary. His ministry began in college and continued as an Associate Pastor of Music at New Hope Baptist Church in Mobile. He then accepted the position of pastor at Pavo Baptist Church in Pavo, Georgia. In 1967, he entered the US Army as a Chaplain and spent over 29 years bringing God’s word to Soldiers and families around the world from Vietnam to Germany and many locations and duty stations across the United States. After his retirement in 1996, he served his community by volunteering through his church with outreach ministries and mission trips. He taught Sunday School and worked as a substitute teacher for several years. He was the Chaplain for the MOAA (Military Officers Association of America) for many years. He would want you to know that he is rejoicing today with his sight fully restored living in the presence of God. His greatest wish was not for him to be remembered necessarily, but for God to be served. Were he here today, his greatest wish would be that all hear the Gospel that there is only one way to heaven. That is by admitting we are sinners, believing in Jesus as our Lord and Savior as the only way to salvation, and confessing that belief. Phillip was a wonderful husband, father, Opa, and friend. He loved God, loved his family, and wanted everyone to know the Lord. He is survived by his wife, Loretta (Newberry); his sons and their families: LTC (Ret) Tim (Audrey) Cassibry of Colorado Springs, CO and COL (Ret) Chris (Teresa) Cassibry of Phenix City, AL; grandchildren: Patrick Cassibry, 1LT Trenton Cassibry, Elizabeth Cassibry Zwier (Ryan), and 2LT Drew Cassibry; his twin brother, CH (LTC, Ret) Paul Cassibry (Edith) of Clinton, MS; his sister in law, Janis Cassibry of Daphne, AL, and many other loving relatives and friends. Phillip was preceded in death by his brother, Robert L. Cassibry, and an infant daughter. We rejoice in knowing he is with our Lord and Savior, but grieve for the great man we will miss. A celebration of Phillip’s life will be held Friday, April 14, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home, Daphne Chapel. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in the Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Spanish Fort.
