On Tuesday, March 23, 2021, A.L. Duke Smith, loving husband, father, and grandfather passed away at the age of 81. Duke was born on March 18, 1940 in Pascagoula, Mississippi. He was preceded in death, by his parents, Augustus and Mary Agnes Smith and sister-in-law Jean Smith. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Before moving to Fairhope, he retired as Captain from the Mobile Fire Department after 29 years of service. Not ready to retire, he joined the Fairhope Fire Department and served 8 more years, 2 of those years being Fire Chief. He was instrumental in the instruction of 160 hours of training which certified the Fairhope Volunteer Fire Department. He was owner and operator of Professional Pest Control for 47 years and a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church. He had a passion for bike riding, community service, and Fairhope. He was present at every sporting event and award ceremonies for his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Patty Smith; two daughters Kim Smith Council (Teddie), Ashley Smith Cobb (Mitch); grandchildren Tyler Lawrence Council, Claire Brustowicz Mixon (Dannie), Margaret-Ashley Council, Lee Alexander Cobb; siblings William C. Smith and Sue Smith (Wayne). Visitation will be held Saturday, March 27, 2021 at 10am at St. Lawrence Catholic Church with a mass of Christian burial to follow at 11:30 am. Interment will follow at Belforest Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fairhope Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 626, Fairhope, AL 36536.
