August Rinhold Schoen, 89, of Elberta, Alabama passed away on Monday, February 15, 2021 at his residence. He was born on November 29, 1931 in Elberta on his family’s farm. He served three tours on the USS Hollister in the Korean War in which he was trained in pipefitting and welding. After his discharge, he returned to Elberta to pursue his career in plumbing with a local contractor. He and his wife later opened Schoen Plumbing and Heating in the early 1960s out of his home in Elberta. Over the years, his small company expanded to include Plumbing, HAVC, Sheet metal, and Septic Pumping. The family business still continues through his three sons and grandsons: first, second and third generation. August met Rose Mary Krehling (Rosie), at her parent’s diner in Elberta, after returning from Korea. A year and a half after their first date, they married on August 3, 1957. They had four children Randy, Jerry, Terry (deceased twin), and Mark. The love birds spent 58 years together raising their family, taking care of their family businesses, traveling, and harvesting their pecan orchard. After retiring in 1993, August continued working in his pecan orchard daily. He immensely enjoyed caring for each hand planted tree. It was one of his pride and joys. August was an avid fisherman, hunter, Atlanta Braves baseball fan, and polka dancer. He loved dancing polka every chance he got with his love, enjoyed spending time hunting and fishing on the Tensaw Delta with his family, and taking countless family vacations as his sons were growing up. August was a vital member of the community and will always be remembered as a patient, hard-working, humble, and honest man who would quickly lend a helping hand to anyone. August was preceded in death by his parents Joseph Schoen and Erna Schoen, his wife Rose Mary Krehling Schoen, his son Terry Schoen, and his brothers Otto Schoen, Henry Schoen, and Edward Schoen. August is survived by his sons Randy (Carrie), Jerry (Donna), and Mark (Marie); his seven grandchildren, Monica Schoen, Kristen (Daniel) Gates, Eric (Megan) Schoen, Brandy Schoen, Amanda (Eric) Jackson, Kyle (Katie) Schoen, and Dalton Schoen; six great- grandchildren, Wyatt Schoen, Connor Gates, Baylinn Schoen, Meryll Jackson, McKinley Gates, and Charlotte Jackson. He is also survived by his siblings, Joseph Schoen Jr., Charlotte Schoen Ulrich, and Harold Schoen. As a brother, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather (Opa), and friend, August will be greatly missed and kindly remembered. The family would like to thank Amedisys Home Health, Kindred Palliative Care, and Kindred Hospice for all their wonderful support and service.
