Anne Carter Irvine died peacefully at home in Fairhope on Friday, January 25, 2019 in the same beautiful, carved wood bed in which she was born in Repton, Alabama on October 8, 1932. She was surrounded by her loving family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. William Robert Carter and Alice Vincent Caine Carter and her older brother, Dr. John Carson Carter. She is survived by her children, George Richardson Irvine, III (Sallye), Anne Carson Irvine Nicolson (David) and Dr. Cecile Starke Irvine Bradshaw (Robert); her grandchildren, Isabel Starke Irvine, George Richardson Irvine, IV, Phineas English Irvine, Sullivan Tate Irvine, William Berney Caine Nicolson and Cecile Grant Nicolson. She is also survived by her brother William Robert Carter, Jr. and her devoted sister, Alice Carter Holmes, numerous beloved nieces and nephews and many loyal friends. Anne was an avid reader and a remarkable scholar. She graduated from Ward-Belmont in Nashville and was awarded a degree in chemistry from the University of Alabama where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa and was the president of her sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma. She had a keen mind and a head for business and went to work for Merrill Lynch after graduation, becoming one of the first female stockbrokers in the South. She also served as the treasurer of the Junior League of Mobile. Many Mobilians will fondly remember her as the owner of the Pappagallo shop and then as the owner of the Celena’s ladies boutiques. She later had many successful years as a realtor with Dauphin Realty. In her spare time she loved a good crossword puzzle and made the world’s best divinity candy, oatmeal cookies and lemon torte. She also enjoyed membership in several mystic societies. As a lifelong athlete with a fiercely competitive spirit, she enjoyed field hockey, basketball, golf and was a stellar tennis player, winning innumerable trophies in too many tournaments to count. (Although, truth be told, her favorite matches occurred every summer with the late Earl McGowin at Lakewood in Point Clear.) She had a deep and abiding love of Mobile Bay and enjoyed fishing, floundering, boating and waterskiing with her children and grandchildren. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to her wonderful caregivers especially Stephanie Broughton, Evie Davies, Evelyn Fitzhugh, Tara Durgin Padgett, April Henry, Sylvia McCryndle and Stella Lenderman. A memorial service is planned for Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at 2 p.m. at St. James Episcopal Church in Fairhope. The family will receive visitors an hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mobile Baykeeper, the Repton Restoration Society, Inc. ( P.O.. Box 322, Repton, AL 36475) or the charity of your choice.
