Ann Haas Cox

July 31, 1934 – March 17, 2018 Ann Haas Cox, a longtime resident of Mobile and Fairhope, Alabama, passed away at her home in Fairhope on March 17, 2018. Her death was caused by complications from Parkinson’s disease.  Ann was born in Mobile. She was the daughter of the late Edward Horst Haas and the late Mary Agnes Johnston. She is survived by her husband, Emmett Ripley ("Rip") Cox, son John Haas Cox (Francessa), of McLean, Virginia, daughter Catherine Cox Jouet (Jason), of Alexandria, Virginia, sister Kay Williams, of Daphne, half-sister Roshell Flowers, of Mobile, and half-brother Edward Haas (Debbie), of Laurel, Mississippi, and five grandchildren, Charlotte Connolly Cox, Lila Caroline Cox, Charles Henry Cox, Emmett Lance Jouet, and Lindsay MacKay Jouet. Ann spent her early years on Dauphin Street in Mobile and at Point Clear on Mobile Bay at the home of her uncle, David W. MacKay. She and her family loved the Bay and visited there many times. Ann attended Visitation Academy, Bishop Toolen Catholic High School for Girls, and Murphy High School. She graduated in 1956 from the University of Alabama where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She moved to San Francisco, California after graduation. Ann moved back to Alabama, living in Birmingham.  Ann and Rip were married in 1964 in St. Joseph’s Chapel on the grounds of Spring Hill College, and later moved to Mobile.  While raising her children, Ann was a devoted room parent and was involved with many charitable service organizations including the Junior League of Mobile and the Art Patrons League. Ann was also a member of the Maids of Mirth Mardi Gras society.  In 1981 Rip became a judge of the United States District Court, and later the Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit.  Ann joined him as he traveled around the circuit through Alabama, Florida and Georgia.  For more than a decade, Ann and Rip also spent some time at their second home in Alexandria, Virginia, where they could be close to their children and grandchildren.  Ann was an active member of Christ the King in Daphne, and more recently St. Lawrence in Fairhope. There will be a memorial mass at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Fairhope at 10:00 am Friday March 23, 2018.
