Alton Hamric Wallace
(1935-2024)
Alton Hamric Wallace passed away Friday, October 25th, 2024, at Ascension Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Florida. Alton was born June 1st, 1935, to Alton Houston Wallace and Gertrude Browning Wallace. He graduated as class Salutatorian at Dadeville High School in Dadeville, Alabama, where he played bass horn in the band and was a guard on the football and basketball teams.
He went on to the University of Alabama where he was initiated into engineering honor society, Tau Beta Pi, and in 1956 was named the ROTC Cadet of the Year, an award given annually to the most outstanding cadet in the Army ROTC program. Alton was the first university Junior in the history of the program to be selected for the honor and the first to receive it a second consecutive year as a Senior.
Alton served in the Army Corps of Engineers and was honorably discharged from the Army Reserve as a captain in 1965. He was an Alabama Professional Engineer, having embarked in 1959 on a 38-year career with International Paper Company. In those years at International Paper, Alton and his wife Patsy moved the family from Alabama to Louisiana, Florida, South Carolina, and Connecticut before finally retiring in Alabama.
After his retirement, Alton became an Area Leader in Stephen Ministries at Gulf Shores United Methodist Church and he was a charter member of Magnolia Methodist Church in Orange Beach.
Alton is survived by his wife of 66 years, Patsy Lockett Wallace, and their three children, Erin Wallace Barbarino (Alberto Woll), Alton Hugh Wallace, and Holly Wallace Schumpert. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
