Alice Carter Kenan, native of Selma, and resident of Point Clear, died peacefully at home on August 21, 2024.
She graduated from Parrish High School in Selma and attended Salem College in Winston Salem, NC and the University of Alabama, where she was member of Delta Delta Delta sorority.
Alice married Guy Hood in 1957 and after his medical training in Birmingham returned to Selma in 1965. She was an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and served on the Boards of the Sturdivant Museum Association, the Weaver Parrish Charitable Trust, and the Edmundite Missions.
After the death of her husband, Guy, in 1984, she married Owen Kenan in 1989. Alice found great joy in blending the two families, which continued after Owen’s death in 1995.
In 2002, she moved to Point Clear and became active in St. James Episcopal Church and the Fairhope-Point Clear community.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents Bess Eison and James Harmon Carter, husbands William Guy Hood, Jr. and William Owen Kenan, stepdaughter Reese Kenan Lewis, and infant great-grandson, Charles Crawford Lewis.
Survivors include children Elizabeth Hood Turner (Selwyn), William Guy Hood III (Lauren), and Harmon Carter Hood (Amanda), and stepchildren Julia Kenan Wilcox (Charles), Elizabeth Kenan Hamilton (Bill), James Kenan II (Melissa), Mary Owen Kenan Thames (Gordon), and son-in-law Mattson Doniphan Lewis.
Her grandchildren include Alice Turner Frost (Richard), Selwyn Turner IV (Caroline), Elizabeth Hood Brown (Travis), Sarah Harmon Hood Bartsch (Nic), Guy Hood IV (Krisan), Stephanie Hood, Sumner Hood, Kenan Lewis (Sandi), Wheeler Lewis Nelson (Jared), Mary Mattson Lewis Simmons (Whit), Sarah Caroline Wilcox St. John (Finis), Henry Hamilton (Rebecca), James Hamilton (Molly), Will Kenan, Francie Kenan Guthans (Bobby), Ella Thames, and Mary Elizabeth Thames. She leaves 15 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 26 at 11:00 at St. James Episcopal Church in Fairhope. Burial will be in Selma with a graveside service Tuesday, August 27 at 11:00 at the New Live Oak Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Selma, St. James Episcopal Church, Fairhope, or the charity of your choice.
